The Person Next to You
The one who belongs listens and responds to Yehovah's words. If you don't listen and respond,

God has given His Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the distinguished mark of a real Christian. whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
The quiet of the late afternoon had settled completely over the workshop. Outside, the Texas heat was finally beginning to break, casting long, golden fingers of light across the concrete floor. Caleb was sitting by the assembly table, working a piece of fine sandpaper over a walnut table leg, his brow furrowed in thought.
Malachi was nearby, meticulously cleaning the threads of a heavy brass valve. He watched the steady, rhythmic movement of his grandson's hands for a moment before speaking.
"You've been sanding that same spot for ten minutes, Caleb. What's weighing on your mind?"
Caleb stopped, looking down at the wood. "I was thinking about Arthur, Grandfather. Everyone in town talks about how religious he is—he’s the head of the church board, he wears the best suits, and he can quote scriptures faster than anyone I know. But on Monday morning, he’s the coldest, most calculating businessman in the county. He cheats his workers, turns away people in need, and treats the commandments like a hobby. People say he has the Spirit because he gets emotional during the music on Sunday. But it doesn't look real to me. What is the actual, unmistakable mark of someone who belongs to the Creator?"
Malachi set his wire brush down and walked over to a small shelf in the corner. He picked up an antique brass oil lamp, its glass chimney pristine and clean. He set it on the table between them.
The Breath and the Movement
"Look at this lamp, Caleb," Malachi said softly. "It has a beautiful brass base, a perfectly trimmed wick, and a flawless glass shade. It looks exactly like a lamp is supposed to look. But if there is no oil inside it, and no fire on the wick, what does it actually do?"
"Nothing," Caleb said. "It’s just a decoration."
"That is exactly what religious pretense looks like," Malachi said, leaning against the workbench. "A person can have the perfect outward shape—the tailored suit, the vocabulary, the church membership, and the applause of the crowd. But without the Holy Spirit, they are just a cold decoration in the lobby. The Holy Spirit is the distinguished, unmistakable mark of a real believer. It isn't a temporary emotional high or a theatrical show for an audience. It is the very life and breath of the Living Creator dwelling inside a human frame."
Malachi reached into his pocket and pulled out his worn leather Scripture, turning the soft, creased pages to the book of Acts. He pointed his finger to Acts 5:32:
“And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
The Evidence of the Fire
"Notice who receives the Spirit, Caleb," Malachi emphasized, his clear eyes locking onto his grandson's. "Mainstream religion loves to teach that the Spirit is just a free, unconditional feeling that requires no change in how you live. But the Word draws a razor-sharp line. The Father gives His Spirit to those who obey Him."
"Obedience comes first?" Caleb asked.
"They walk hand-in-hand, son," Malachi explained. "When a heart truly repents, it stops running down the lawless highway of human traditions and turns back to the Father’s Torah. You begin to guard the Sabbath because He sanctified it; you desire honest weights and a pure life. And when you yield your will to His instructions, He pours His Holy Spirit into you as a seal of ownership.
The Spirit gives you the power, the love, and the soft heart needed to actually live out those instructions. If a person claims to have the Spirit but lives a life of anomia—lawlessness, ignoring the commandments and walking in pride—they are deceiving themselves. The Spirit of God never empowers a man to break the laws of God."
