The one who belongs listens and responds to Yehovah's words. If you don't listen and respond,
it is because you don't belong to Yehovah." John 8:47

"For many are called, but few are chosen.”
The Saturday morning sun was just beginning to dry the heavy dew on the pasture grass when Malachi stepped out into the barnyard. Beside him was Caleb, holding a long nylon lead rope. Today was the day they were going to select a young heifer from the herd to be trained for the halter—a process that required absolute gentleness, trust, and willingness to yield to the master's hand.
Down in the lower paddock, the entire herd of thirty cattle was gathered, lowing for their morning feed. ""They all look eager enough when the grain bucket rattles, Grandfather,"" Caleb joked, watching the crowd press against the wire gate. Malachi smiled, his eyes scanning the sea of cattle. ""They love the benefits of the ranch, Caleb. But training is a different matter. Open the gate and let them into the main corral. Let's see who is ready for the work.""
The Wide Invitation
Caleb unlatched the heavy iron gate. The moment the path opened, Malachi let out a loud, familiar call that echoed across the valley. It was the call that signaled food, safety, and the master's presence. Instantly, the entire herd came pouring through the gate. All thirty of them trotted into the corral, kicking up dust, crowding around the feeding troughs, and jostling for position. They all answered the call. Every single one of them wanted to be in the place of blessing, standing in the enclosure of the master's barnyard. ""See how they all run to you?"" Caleb remarked, leaning against the wooden rails.
""They run to the invitation, son,"" Malachi said softly, stepping into the center of the corral. ""The call goes out to the whole field. Nobody is barred from coming into the yard. But watch what happens next.""
Malachi walked slowly toward the crowd, carrying a simple hemp halter in his hand. He didn't rush; his movements were steady, his voice a low, reassuring murmur.
The moment Malachi stepped close, the behavior of the herd shifted drastically.
The vast majority of the cattle immediately backed away. When they saw the halter—the symbol of yielding their own will to the master's direction—their ears went back. Some shook their heads in defiance. Others turned their backs and retreated to the far corners of the fence, content to eat the scattered hay but refusing to let Malachi get within arm's reach. They wanted the food, but they absolutely refused the yoke.
The One Who Yielded But near the water trough, a quiet, deep-red heifer stood her ground. She didn't run with the crowd, and she didn't panic when Malachi approached. As the old man drew near, the heifer tilted her head, her large, dark eyes locked onto him. She trembled slightly as Malachi reached out a calloused hand, but instead of bolting, she took a slow step forward. She lowered her nose, sniffing his palm, and allowed Malachi to gently stroke her neck.
With a smooth, practiced motion, Malachi slipped the halter over her head. She didn't fight the rope; she simply leaned into his side, yielding her weight to his guidance.
Malachi looked over at Caleb, who was watching in silence.""Look at the corral, Caleb,"" Malachi said, his voice carrying the weight of ancient truth. ""How many did I call into this yard morning?"" ""All of them,"" Caleb answered. ""Thirty."" ""And how many are willing to wear the halter and walk the path with me?"" ""Just the one."" Malachi reached into his pocket and pulled out his worn pocket Scripture, turning to the parables in the Gospel of Matthew. He placed his finger on the text of Matthew 22:14 and read it aloud:
“For many are called, but few are chosen.”
The Mark of the Chosen ""The world—and the grand pavilions of modern religion—love to focus entirely on the crowd in the corral,"" Malachi explained, looking out at the cattle pressed against the far fence. ""They think that because they answered the broad invitation, because they sit in the building, eat the benefits, and hang around the master’s yard, they are part of His inner kingdom.""
The old man stroked the red heifer's ears, and she rested her head against his waist.""But the King’s choosing isn't a random lottery, Caleb. The chosen ones are the ones who yield. The call goes out into all the highways and byways of the earth—a free invitation to enter the Covenant. But when the King steps into the room with His standards, His Torah, and His demand for a circumcised heart, the crowd scatters. They want cheap grace, but they reject the narrow gate. They want the kingdom's protection, but they want to keep running their own lives in lawlessness.""
Malachi handed the lead rope to Caleb. The red heifer followed the boy's gentle tug without resistance, walking steadily beside him. ""The chosen are few, son, because few are willing to drop the cargo of their own pride and say, 'Not my will, but Yours be done.' Don't look at the crowd eating the grain, Caleb. Look for the ones who are willing to wear the Master's halter and walk in His dust.""
